Reference Photo

This image was taken at one of the Hakone Japanese Garden's ponds. I loved how the light was landing on the leaves. It's a quiet photo, but there is a lot of movement and rhythm.

Adding a light amount of Hooker's Green. Be careful, add lightly as this color is "staining". Look carefully, we added a glaze of Hooker's green over some of the Magenta petals.

Follow along and add a light amount of Quinacridone Magenta to the petals as shown. This color combination makes a subtle gray tone.

We are now going to add Hooker's green to the leaf behind the flower. We are adding wet on dry, and then using a damp, clean brush we are softening the edges.

Friday March 23, 2007

We are now mixing a dark in our palettes. The color combinations are Neutral Tint, Quinacridone Magenta and Hooker's Green. Make a mixture and apply this thickly wet on dry, keeping a "bead" and continuing to add paint and move the darks as shown. We are working on a small shape to begin with

Friday March 23, 2007

Add more "mixed darks" as above, and go to the next larger area as shown.

Now, with a much lighter value (just add water) don't apply the mixed darks as heavily, add the light gray's to the shadowed petals and indicate the lines needed on the leaf shaped submerged in the dark background as shown to the left.

Friday March 30, 2007

Working wet on dry we added Hooker's Green as shown on the leaves in the upper left hand corner. Lay the color down, and then soften edges with a damp brush. Make sure you lay it on really wet, so you can move it, this is a very staining color.

Friday March 30, 2007

Now we are doing the same technique, but moving around to another leaf.

We want to save our whites, so lay your color "wet" but please use the color lightly. Be careful not to move the color too much as we want to keep the whites of the paper.

Now, really add a "wet" amount and a little heavy with color to paint the outer edge, and lay it down with one stroke, and then quickly with a damp clean brush, move along the edge to soften the inside edge, as it looks on the reference photo.

Keep adding light washes of Hooker's Green as indicated on this painting. Go to the Center leaf and work wet, and soften with a damp brush. Concentrate on getting the shapes filled in, not the detail. This is just the foundation of the painting.

Keep adding light washes of Hooker's Green as indicated on this painting. Go to the bottom left leaf and work wet, and soften with a damp brush. Concentrate on getting the shapes filled in, not the detail. This is just the foundation of the painting. Next week we can start building color and all the wonderful details.

We added a wash over the dark background to even out some of the spottiness (is that a word?) of the background.
