Home Up

This image was taken in the grounds of Filoli Spring of 2010.

I was instructing the Beginners Watercolor Workshop and the weather was overcast but warm, and the lighting from the sky was diffused. No harsh dramatic shadows or key lights. Everything was soft, brilliant and it was a challenge to fit everything in....

I added Permanent Rose Glazes over the Tulips as shown, deepening the values.

I Glazed Hooker's Green over the entire background. When Dry I went in and added more just into the darker spots.

Notice I also "broke" up the left hand upper corner with a bit of green!

I Added Darks wet on dry and softened as shown. the Darks consist of Perm Rose, Hooker's Green and Indigo, most places the darks were mostly the Indigo color. I just kept moving don't hand around too much, keep your brush moving.

Look how different the tulips look after adding the darks!

I've added Yellow to the center of the flower parts, and then when dry added Perm Rose over the parts as shown. I also added Yellow to the petals near the center on the big tulip, can you find them? I then added some Perm Rose to the center of the Tulip on the left on the "parts" can you see the difference?

I've softened the pink around the bee's face with a clean damp brush - I do say soften, and NOT scrub!

I want to clean up edges with a scrubber and also to add more interest in the stems & leaves but will wait for Friday's class as well as getting to the bee!

Working in layers I added Burnt Sienna to the bee's legs and face and wings. I also added Sepia to the bee's eye, and finding it too slanted made adjustments rounding out the top making the eyes to read "friendlier". Added Perm Rose to the legs and antenna, then added Sepia over it to get darker. Mixed Burnt Sienna and Sepia and added it to the rings on the bee's body and added yellow over all the body. Added bits of Winsor Orange red shade to the wings and face and mouth & body of the bee. Let's see how you all do....
