This image is from my Dad's backyard. When I worked for Calyx & Corolla, I traveled to Peoria Illinois, in the winter to help set up and train our outsourced call center. After my "tour" of duty, I was given the "roots" of different peonies, and I gave them to my dad. They now bloom year after year.

We are going to be working with one color, just to build up the underpainting. There are complex shapes, and we are going to be spending time locating and painting them.
Using Quinacridone Magenta, we are painting wet onto dry paper, softening edges as shown to the left.

We are continuing with the same Color: Quinacridone Magenta, and we are applying the paint wet onto dry. I want you to really look at the shapes and how they relate to each other. Some shapes require a hard edge, and some a softer edge.

Please keep in mind that we do not have to paint the whole shape at once. We can break them up into "bite" sized shapes, so we can have better control, we can always "merge" them together later.

We are just working the under-painting, trying to make sense of the shapes. Remember to step back from your painting to get a better perspective of what you're working on. If you stay focused too close, you lose your control, and "focused" attention. Step back, take a breath, and really look at what you're creating.

This was a fun step for me. To try and find the center shapes, and try and get it all down at once. If we stay a little lighter than usual, and pay attention to our hard edges, and really soften the outer edges we can move back into this shape easily, once this is dry. At this point I am really seeing the peony blossom take shape.

This was a great opportunity to work a glaze. We painted the left hand side, middle shapes and joined them by glazing over the whole shape.

Please look at the difference from the previous image to find the differences.

This time we added Quinacridone Gold to the center of the blossom looking to find more shapes and to set the flower as a flower.

This is as far as I was able to catch up to you all in class Friday.

Notice that I did glaze over the petals that were saved as white in the center of the flowers. Keep going.

I know this is a big jump from the previous photo, I just added washes with Permanent Rose to build up the shapes and tones. To get darker in the "center portion" I used Hooker's green, wet on dry and softened the edges. Once you go over it with Perm Rose or Quin Magenta the green disappears.
Now I added a single wash of a light amount of Thalo Blue down over the Bottom portion of the image working right to left.

Once the Thalo Blue wash dried, I looked at the image, and I decided to add more thalo blue to the top edges of the image also.
After seeing everyone else's Peony, I will add more darks to the center.

This is not yet finished. We will scrub some edges to clean up.
